Sacred Heart School’s annual welcome back picnic
The picnic got of to a spirited start Sunday August 26th, a great time was had by all renewing friendships, meeting new friends, looking at classrooms and enjoying the delicious food prepared by Chef Michael. The new school gym now under construction was a favorite topic of conversation during the afternoon. Even the weather cooperated as the students enjoyed activities on the courtyard.

The Rev. Harry Dunn, Pastor, and Sister Lillian Jordan, Principal at Sacred Heart Church and Grade School, share a joyful moment as they prepare for a new school year and the 50th anniversary of Sacred Heart School.
We begin the school with a real sense of excitement as we watch the construction of our new gym as well as new classroom improvements, high tech Smart Boards, computers, and textbooks.

GOVERNOR RECOGNIZES McCUNE FOR MAKING COLLEGE DREAMS POSSIBLE
CHARLESTON - Not many Mingo County high school seniors were applying to Ivy League schools before Teresa McCune began offering college information sessions. Now the Williamson attorney is helping young people envision a college education outside Mingo County - and is giving them the tools to get there.
Gov. Joe Manchin  recognized  McCune, 55, with a 2007 Governor's Service Award at a banquet
July 11, 2007  in Charleston as part of Faces of Leadership, the state conference on volunteerism, national service and service-learning. McCune is one of 13 recipients - and one of two in the adult category - of this year's premier award for volunteerism and community service in West Virginia. The awards have been presented annually since 1995 to youth, young adults, adults, seniors, families, organizations and businesses.
Because McCune's own son attended Harvard, she is acutely aware of the daunting prospect of applying to, and paying for, an Ivy League education. She began offering tutorials for students on the application process, including how to write strong essays and how to earn scholarships. Soon, she was spending countless hours helping students across the county negotiate the college application process. "I thought it was quite a stretch for an African-American girl from the coal fields of West Virginia to be applying to not only Ivy League schools, but extremely prestigious national scholarships," said Amy Elizabeth Jones, a junior at Yale who nominated McCune. "Not once did she hint at the possibility of everything not working. Her confidence in me made me believe that anything was possible."
So far, McCune has worked with approximately 35 students applying to colleges and professional schools. Students in her program have been accepted to Harvard, Yale, Brown and Savannah School of the Arts as well as Wheeling Jesuit, WVU and Marshall.
McCune joined forces with a former Mingo County Board of Education member and fellow AAUW member, Dee Kapoourales to throw "showers" for young women who needed supplies - from dorm accessories to personal hygiene products - along with some moral support before leaving for college. The shower "guests of honor," may be attending college locally or far away, but McCune keeps in touch with them through letters and care packages even after they leave Williamson.
The Governor's Service Awards are administered by the West Virginia Commission for National and Community Service to honor outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses solving community problems through volunteer service. A panel of volunteer judges, including past awardees, choose the recipients on the basis of achievement, community needs, continuing involvement, innovation and impact of service.
Teresa is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a long time volunteer and supporter of Sacred Heart School.

Saint Francis Day Celebration
Hermit crabs, cockatiels, white mice, rabbis, cats and dogs came to the pet blessing at Sacred Heart on October 4th, the day set aside to remember Saint Francis of Assisi.
Saint Francis is known around the world as a holy man devoted to the service of God and his people.
Saint Francis is particularly known for his example of simplicity, and love of God’s creatures. The blessing of pets is an honored tradition at Sacred Heart where Father Dunn takes special care to bless all present and assures young pet owners of God’s care for their animals at home, if they are unable to be present.

Joel F King, author of the recently published “The Star-Spangled State Book” a history/geography book about our United States, is a 1979 graduate of Sacred Heart School. Convinced that you learn best and retain more when you’re having fun, Joel has created a colorful, engaging book and accompanying workbook, chuck full of illustrations along with interesting information and facts just begging to be learned.
We’re delighted to have autographed copies of both of Joel’s books, gifts of the author in school. Joel is the son of Peggy and Joe King, long time members of Sacred Heart Church. Joel is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and resides with his wife and three boys in western Kentucky.
